When you volunteer with Palliative Care ACT you make a wonderful contribution to the life of those with a terminal illness. You also get a great sense of satisfaction and the knowledge that you have made a difference to the life of someone in need.
All persons volunteering with Palliative Care ACT must have a current Working with Vulnerable People registration and be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccinations

Volunteers visits to clients living at home, in residential aged care facilities, and for life story writing is one-on-one support. The time and duration of each visit depends on the client’s assessed needs. Clare Holland House volunteers complete four-hour shifts. There are usually two volunteers on each shift.
Desirable attributes for Palliative Volunteers
- Awareness of own feelings, values, and beliefs in relation to personal grief and death
- A desire to work with dying people, their families, and carers
- Respect for, and ability to accept other people’s philosophies, beliefs, and rights
- Emotional maturity
- Ability to listen and to be comfortable with silence
- Capacity to accept the expression of strong emotion
- Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and professional boundaries
- Flexibility and capacity to work as part of a team
- Prepared to share volunteering experiences with team members, and participate in continuing education
- Able to commit to palliative care ACT volunteering for a minimum of four hours a week for at least 12 months
- Warmth, patience, empathy, discretion and a sense of humour.
HOW DO I VOLUNTEER?

- A pre-training interview will then be arranged with prospective volunteers.
- After interview, applicants are invited to attend a training course.
- Once graduated, new volunteers work on ‘buddy shifts’ and are supported by our Coordinators of Volunteer Programs and/or experienced volunteers commence.
